Lecturers: Ger Koole / Ran Yang (R551)

In this course we choose two subject from or related to Applied stochastic modeling or Optimization of business processes. Each student presents two papers from the scientific literature and writes a paper about it. Every student also implements once an algorithm presented by another student. We often go or one or two company visits.

Autumn, for master students BWI, Ectrie, W, exchange students.

Examination: presentations, papers, implementation. Presence during the lectures is compulsory.

Required prior knowledge: Applied stochastic modeling and Optimization of business processes or equivalent.

Most papers can be found on the internet at the author's home pages, in an electronic journal through the VU library home page (use link to e-journals) or via Google Scholar.

On each Wednesday the student whose name is on the list should give a presentation on the paper cited above. This does not mean that everything that is in the paper has to be discussed: the main results should be treated in a way that is clear to everybody. The assistant can help when you have questions. The presentation can be done using powerpoint or some othe rpresentation program (for example pdf). A beamer and a laptop can be reserved at the helpdesk, sometimes a beamer is already present in the room.
A week after the presentation a paper on the presentation should be submitted. In the paper the main results of the paper should be presented. You should also give your opinion about the applicability of the paper. Presentation + paper count for 30% in the final grade.
When your name appears in brackets then you should implement the main algorithm of the paper. The deadline for the programs and a short explaining paper is 19 december. Algorithm + paper count also 30% in the grade.
